What is your name, age, occupation?
Brendan Dickinson, 42 years old, Primary School Principal

What brought you to CrossFit JAK?
Some friends had joined and seemed to be really enjoying it. I was struggling for motivation to get the gym and thought I’d come along for a trial and see how I go.

Did you have any fears or apprehension before you started at CrossFit JAK?
I wondered how I would go with the movements and was quite anxious about the gymnastics components. I’m not known for my flexibility and was nervous that I would not be able to do lots of things.

How would you say this program is different than others you’ve tried?
I love that it is always varied and challenging. I can see myself improving all of the time. It is great to just get out of bed and turn up, not needing to think about the program as it is all done for me. I never get bored like I was in the traditional gym.

What is something you can do now that you weren’t able to do before you started?
There is so much, apart from now being able to touch my toes without bending my knees, my very first goal was to be able to do ten pull ups. When I started I could do just one. Where I used to be anxious about the gymnastics component, I now Iook forward to it.

How has CrossFit JAK changed who you are?
I’m the fittest and strongest I’ve ever been, I feel more confident and have made so many knew friends who are like minded.

What has surprised you most since you started?
I go to the morning classes most of the time and I never turn my alarm off and go back to bed. As soon as it goes off I jump up and get going. This is so much different to when I was going to the traditional gym. Being at JAK is like being in a team where everyone supports you and encourages to be your best. At most gyms I’ve been to people don’t talk or joke around. At JAK there is always someone to have a laugh with when you are working out and to give you that little extra push to go just that bit further.

A lot of people are worried they’re not fit enough to try CrossFit. What would you say to them?
I learnt very early that you are not competing with anyone else, just trying to improve your own performance. There are some aspects that I am still not good at but keep challenging myself to try to improve. Whatever your fitness level, that’s your starting point. You’ll be amazed at how much you improve and how quick the fitness comes.
